Reading and Language Arts
Schoolwide Curriculum Reading Fundamentals has a central mission to develop, expand, and enhance the skills, strategies, and tools students can use to make meaning of and interact with text. Reading Fundamentals Units of Study exist inside a balanced literacy framework. Within this framework, there are opportunities to read to students (mentor texts), to read with students (shared texts), and to have students read independently (books and other texts at their independent reading levels). The order in which we complete our units will be the launching unit, fiction, non-fiction, and poetry. |
Math-Bridges Curriculum
Students focus intensively on the four critical areas specified by the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics in Grade Three: Developing understanding of multiplication and division and strategies for multiplication and division within 100 Developing understanding of fractions, especially unit fractions (fractions with numerator 1) Developing understanding of the structure of rectangular arrays and of area Describing and analyzing two-dimensional shapes The first unit reviews and extends work with addition and subtraction as students review facts, look for patterns, and work with larger numbers. The order in which we complete our units will be: Unit 1 - Review addition and subtraction Unit 2-Transition to multiplication Unit 3-Addition and subtraction (using larger numbers) Units 4 - Measurement, Fractions, Unit 5 - Division, and Multiplication Unit 6-Geometry |
Science and Social Studies
We will alternate between Science and Social Studies. We use Mystery Science as our resource. There is no Science textbook. We will be conducting many experiments throughout each unit. We will also keep a Science Notebook where we will record what we are learning. Social Studies will be taught using our new Social Studies Newspaper. These concepts will be taught using the same strategies learned in Reading. We will also be completing many projects to enhance our learning. |
Words Their Way
Words Their Way is a word study program which helps students understand words and spelling patterns. Word sorts are differentiated based on student's skills. Students will be introduced to a new sort every Monday. They will be tested on that sort the following Monday. Students will be practicing the sorts daily in class and will be working on their lists and choice boards at home for homework. |
